Have you heard of one of Lego's newest developments? It is the Mindstorms NXT.Now this is no ordinary toy. If your child liked playing with the simple, non-functional lego bricks of years past, they will undoubtably love the Mindstorms NTX.
It will make their imagination grow and possibly point your child in the career direction of electronics and robots. Who knows?
The main part of the Mindstorm is the NXT itself. This is its brains and controller. It's about the size of an iPod (though a bit thicker) with a loudspeaker, an LCD, and navigation keys. It also has three ports on top for connecting to the servo motors and ports on the bottom for connecting to
different sensors: Touch, Light, Sound, and Ultrasonic.
These sensors allow the Mindstorm to feel and react to its environment, react to sound, detect light and color, measure distance, and react to movement. Lastly its Servo Motors allow the robot to move with precision
The Mindstorms NXT includes Ethernet-like wires for connecting all of these things to the NXT. It also has simple software and an USB cable for downloading programs from your computer.
Obviously it also contains the well known Lego building blocks. All in all, enough to keep your child busy for hours of endless creations. Then, too, if your child already has a supply of other Legos (like most kids do) the possibilities are endless on what they can create.
